No. 8 Carrying Art by Women into Museums

Artist Gabriela Acha took the idea of breaking down the obstacles for women artists literally. She completely skipped the oppressive process and carried the works of women artists into a Museum and gallery on her back.

This radical act of actively ignoring the systemic process of showing work in a Museum or Gallery is revolutionary but is not new to the art world. Yet, Gabriela Acha told the ones acting as barriers to “watch this”. With a group of other stewards of this feminist act, The Mobile Exhibition Space performance, they walked between art spaces and acted as the pillar or wall to which the work hung on their shoulders. The inherent metaphorical meaning of carrying the weight of progress is not missing from the performance. The duality in meaning of progress and challenging the white cube gallery space is the direction of contemporary art. It is also a step in the right direction for dismantling the oppressive and gatekeeping mentally of the art world.
